The Finishing Transformation

Finishing transforms printed substrates into functional, deployable products. A printed vinyl sheet becomes a banner through hemming and grommeting; a photographic print becomes a display through mounting and lamination. Finishing choices affect durability, appearance, installation method, and cost—understanding options enables appropriate specification.

Cutting and Trimming

Guillotine cutting suits straight-line trimming of rigid substrates and paper stacks. Precision ±0.5mm adequate for most applications; knife changes affect edge quality.

Rotary cutting (slitting) handles roll materials, creating parallel cuts for width standardization. Razor or score slitting methods vary by material thickness.

Computer-controlled cutting (CNC, laser, knife) creates complex shapes: contour cutting following printed shapes; intricate patterns impossible with straight-line methods; and precision tolerances ±0.1mm.

Die cutting utilizes custom steel rules for high-volume identical shapes. Economical for large quantities; setup costs justify volume production.

Hemming and Edge Reinforcement

Single-fold hems: material folded once and stitched or welded. Standard for banners; 25-50mm fold typical.

Double-fold hems: material folded twice creating stronger edge. Used for large banners or high-wind applications.

Rope hems: cord inserted in hem pocket for tear resistance. Essential for large banners and building wraps.

Welded hems: heat or RF welding creating strong, flat seams without stitching holes. Preferred for vinyl banners; superior strength and weather resistance.

Grommet and Hardware Installation

Metal grommets: brass, nickel, or stainless steel eyelets installed at corners and intervals. Standard spacing 300-400mm; corner reinforcement essential.

Plastic grommets: economy alternative; less durable but corrosion-resistant.

Pole pockets: sleeves created by hemming top and bottom for pole insertion. Enables tensioning without grommet stress.

Webbing and D-rings: heavy-duty reinforcement for large installations. Sewn webbing distributes load; D-rings enable rope attachment.

Lamination and Surface Protection

Film lamination: clear PVC or polyurethane applied with heat/pressure. Gloss, matte, and luster finishes; UV protection; and abrasion resistance. Thermal (heat-activated) or cold (pressure-sensitive) methods.

Liquid lamination: sprayed or roller-applied coatings. Economy for large areas; uneven application risk; UV and graffiti protection.

Mounting lamination: adhesive films bonding prints to rigid substrates. Pressure-sensitive or heat-activated; permanent or repositionable.

Mounting and Rigid Substrate Application

Pressure-sensitive mounting: adhesive films bonding prints to boards. Cold laminators apply pressure; heat-assisted for stronger bond.

Wet mounting: adhesive applied liquid, squeegeed smooth. Traditional for fine art; skill-intensive.

Direct rigid printing bypasses mounting—UV printers print directly onto foam board, acrylic, metal. Eliminates adhesion failure risk.

Standoff mounting: hardware creating dimensional separation from walls. Stainless steel or aluminum barrels; various lengths and finishes.

Specialty Finishing

Die-cutting and kiss-cutting: through-cutting for shapes; kiss-cutting for decals (cuts face stock not liner).

Perforating: tear-off coupons, tickets, or ventilation patterns.

Scoring and folding: crease lines enabling clean folds for dimensional displays.

Grommetless hanging: adhesive hem tape, banner tape, or welded loops.

Finishing Selection Guidelines

Select hemming/grommeting for: banners requiring rope or bungee hanging; outdoor applications with wind loading; and reusability.

Select lamination for: UV protection extending outdoor life; abrasion resistance in high-touch areas; and graffiti protection enabling cleaning.

Select mounting for: rigid presentation eliminating curling; dimensional displays; and permanent installation.
